My review of the 2021 Dell XPS 17 (9710). This is the best laptop Dell has ever put out in their XPS line. But omfg ... that trackpad

To say "skip the 4K display" just says clueless review, it's the best feature of that unit at 2400 pixels vertical, these units are for professionals, that need to see as much data as possible, be it eCommerce analytics or an AI dump. Reviewer sounds like a 17 yr old with what he thinks is important. Btw, no prob with the track pad.

To those of you on this comment thread who asked about Dave's views on Lenovo Thinkpads, he has already expressed his opinion in a video few year ago titled "Every Laptop Sucks". He says Lenovo's infamous "component lottery" is too big of an inconsistency to recommend their business laptops to anyone. It's a serious issue Lenovo has failed to address over the course of 16 years since 2005 when they bought the brand, because they make Thinkpads for large corporate buyers who don't care as much about Quality Control of an individual laptop. Their consumer - Ideapad, Yoga, and ThinkBook - brands are better than Thinkpads in terms of QC in my experience.

Why would anyone get this over the M16, or G15. Unless you have absolutely fuck you money, in which case just buy an M1 Max. Currently Dell XPS lineup are some of the most overpriced mediocre machines out there, as far as the internals they go for, & the QC issues. Right now you can get the following: - Dell XPS 17, i7-11800H W/RTX 3060 6bg & 16gb dd4r ram + 1tb storage & the 4k panel for £2700!!!! - Meanwhile, the Asus M16 has the exact same processor, GPU, RAM & Storage option with a brilliant screen that's also 16:10 (I don't think it's a 4K panel though) & it only costs £1600 £1100 difference between two devices that are internally identical, both are built really well... so why tf would anyone buy the Dell XPS 17? these people are so out of touch with reality.

I have an XPS 13 bought in 2018 and it's been amazing, no issues with anything at all, including trackpad. Just bought the XPS 17 9710 and waiting on the edge of my seat for delivery. Thanks for the really great review Dave, all the detail I needed to make my decision, just hope I'm lucky with the trackpad.

Unfortunatelly I have same trackpad issue with new 2021 Latitude 7320. DELL cannot fix it for about month now. So it looks like DELL engineers are not capable to design reliable touchpads. It's the sad fact. :-(

Upgraded my XPS 9550 to an XPS 9700 last year and got a flawed trackpad. Sent it back and got a second unit with an even worse trackpad. Decided to go for the LG Gram 17 as I realized I need the big screen more than I need the performance. Couldn't be happier with the gram. Highly recommend it for people who don't need the dedicated GPU. Intel tiger lake has decent integrated graphics and im able to do 1080p video editing no problem. I also use it for programming and performance has been great. Plus it has all the ports and it's really light. Sad to see Dell is still sending out crappy trackpads on the 9710. Hopefully they get their shit together in the future.

Bought one about 5 months ago.. i9, 64G, 2TB SSD, and Nvidia 2060. ($4700) Works well, but your absolutely right on target. That touch-pad is absolutely horrible!! Shouting from the roof tops with you too.. "DELL, you have got to FIX THIS!!" The GPU also.. if your running high video res and really driving the card.. it can get loud but also hot. So far it hasn't failed on me... so it keeps chugging, but instead of giving the laptop a little more than the 10mm of clearance (I didn't actually measure it, but there isn't a lot of room between the desk and the air intake ports) I had to put the laptop on coffee coasters so the laptop can get as much cold air as possible to keep the GPU cool. Nice machine, but again, if I see Dell continue with this touch-pad, its a deal breaker.... I won't buy another one.

The trackpad seems to be a major dell quality issue. I bought the most expensive dell inspirion last year and it had the same issue with the trackpad. Not only that, it would randomly just move and click around itself and sometimes not register clicks. I had to switch my laptop for a new one 4 TIMES before I got a working one. I really love dell products, but this just needs to be figured out

I bought the 17" Dell XPS, it was my third XPS laptop. Compared to my 15" Dell XPS, the brightness was noticeably lower. I returned it and got a second 17" XPS replacement and it had the same exact problem. I don't have measurement instruments, but I guarantee you that it was not reaching its 500 NIT spec. It just looked dull compared by my XPS 15. This was inexcusable for a $3000.00 laptop and so I returned it and got a high-end HP Envy. The 15" HP Envy has an Nivida 2060 GPU, superior cooling (to the XPS 15), an OLED screen which is superior to the XPS screens, the same CPU, 32 GB of ram and it cost $1800.00 before tax. It just smokes the Dell XPS. I also like the keyboard better than the Dell XPS 15 /17 keyboards. The only thing that is inferior to the XPS laptops is the battery life. You are absolutely right, the AMD 5800 laptop chips would have been a game changer, but Dell won't switch. With the advent of the M1 chips from Apple, laptop manufacturers are going to be forced to go with AMD or they will be left in the dust. Even the new Alder Lake CPU will not keep pace with the Apple M1. The ONLY CPU out there right now that can beat the M1 is the AMD 5850 laptop CPU and it is neck and neck with most synthetic tests. I am very interested to see which laptop manufacturers will adopt the new AMD 6000 series that is coming out. It should beat the Apple M1 in performance and be competitive in battery performance and cooling.

I have the XPS 2018, and I had a serious problem with this computer. I couldn't control the cursor. I carried this problem for over a year and did not know what to do. I took it to Dell Technical Service in my country and they never gave me a solution. I was about to sell it; but we disconnected the touch input from the screen, and this was the solution.

I have to say, the XPS line is definitely one of the weirdest. I own an XPS 17 9700 from last year, I bought it after the whole charging issue thing was fixed and was lucky enough to win the QC lottery with the trackpad, so it's been one of the best devices I've ever used - and I've used a lot. It's a damn shame that they can't seem to get the QC right so that everyone can have the same experience, though.

New subscriber! Currently deciding on whether to buy this laptop. I teach Interior Designers how to use SketchUp (3D software) and I’m going to launch a new V-Ray course soon (photo-real rendering). My own desktop is a custom build with dual Xeon processors and whilst he is the love of my life, I need something more realistic and reflective of my target audience usage, to test render times. Hello XPS 17 :) I was automatically opting for the i9 until Dave advised not to consider this (due to thermal throttle) and now I’m concerned that I’m not future proofing this laptop adequately. I’d love more information/comparisons on i7 vs i9 to back up Dave’s opinion here. Great review!

You lost me at "60hz panels". 60hz isn't acceptable when all smartphones are 120hz or close to being 120hz as standard. Even sub $400 phones are 120hz... For such an expensive product, that's ludicrously overpriced. The screen itself, however, looks amazing and I want it. Just needs to be 144hz+ before I buy.

I only trust reviews of retail units. Issues are only ever highlighted because of them. Of course review units won’t suffer from trackpad wobble, companies like dell aim to promote their laptops in the most effective and positive way possible. I believe what’s holding the consumer back from receiving good quality devices in general is the minimum 1 year guarantee that was enacted through legislation. Why, because companies like dell recognise that they don’t need to apply the sufficient QC practises as it’s not of their concern if the product goes faulty post warranty which is just a year. QC barely exists with almost all tech companies. After buying the HP Envy 13 brand new in 2019 (mx250, i5), it arrives with a rattling trackpad. Recently I bought the 2021 model, and that had the same issue.

Does anyone know if Dell XPS 17 will come with the Iris Xe GPU option in the future for a basic model build I would buy the XPS if they had that option since LG Gram 17 has the Iris Xe gpu but the Grams option for upgrades on the memory and M.2 are not available, the XPS has those options for future upgrades. Dell give us the Iris Xe instead of the basic Intel UHD on the larger XPS 17 and or XPS 15 not just on the XPS 13 I am not a gamer, a developer, nor a creator I am just an average Joe who's a entrepreneur who does basic spreadsheets and pdf files and movies and music give us that option please. Despite of their great designs and specs, having had to use Dell premium service on two of my recent almost top of the line XPS laptops (13 and 15 inch models) to fix various issues, like bulging battery, bad keyboard keys and dead motherboard, etc., my patience with Dell is really wearing thin. Sorry, XPS series is f....ed up irrevocably. Dell ALWAYS had issues with build and quality control. I have XPS 9560 with 1050 and i5 / 32 GB and literally only GOOD thing about it is 4k display. Battery capacity degrades litterally with every reload, thermals are abbysmal, structurally it is weak, TB port often hangs, fingerprint with windows works every second time. My series also have only two of four PCIe lines for single USB-C / TB port connected and it CAN'T charge through TB. WiFi takes FOREVER to start. Build-wise, this is league lower than MacBook Pro I got at work. With exception of screen, this is DOWNGRADE from trusty, performant E6430 with 3rd gen i7 and NV5200 which - unlike XPS - didn't throttle in Mass Effect 3!

XPS 9500 not only had trackpad problems but a rampant speaker rattle problem. Hopefully that was fixed this year. I don't understand why they can't include just one UBS-a port. Thumb drives, wireless mice, so many things are USB-a. Just one port would fix almost all the issues. The dongle is really a bad solution for people with a usb mouse. Every single time you pack and unpack the computer you need to plug the dongle back in, whereas a USB-a mouse adapter doesn't get broken in the bag.

Please do not put AMD CRAP in the XPS..... Intel is far superior in every way!!! The 'working relationship' thing you're thinking of is called MDF - Marketing Development Fund. Intel is rather notorious for using MDF as a simultaneous stick and carrot against OEMs and SIs who are interested in carrying AMD parts. I remember one such case where the MDF was so lucrative, if they lost access to this funding by carrying AMD processors, they would lose money on the deal even if AMD physically gave them the CPUs for free. I'm pretty sure they got sued for this. That said, it seems times do not change, and they're still doing it. Just not quite as brazenly as this.
