It's sad but I don't think Apple will ever care about gaming. It doesn't matter how powerful their hardware gets.

I think there is more to this if you look at it through a different lens. Think about how many people choose Windows desktops or laptops because of the fact that they can play video games well. Imagine now that Apple made laptops that covered off that base like the Macbook Pro with the new M1 chips that from a hardware standpoint could stand up to a 'Gaming Laptop' and games were designed to work effectively on Mac OS. Why now are people going to buy Windows laptops if given the choice? Price? Hardware, GUI, battery life, and more are better on Macs. They could dominate market share if they took away the gaming aspect that Windows really has going for it.

How do you know what Apple is going to do in the future? Apple always try to expand their line up and services. Gaming is a big business and with ios gaming they are doing great. who knows maybe in the future they decide to get into Gaming the same way they start movie making and created Apple TV+. Creating a video and say "NO they won't do it" doesn't make any sense because you don't know what's their plain for the future is.

There is an Apple dedicated gaming system - It's called Apple TV and their (you could call it their version of +AAA) titles are on Apple Arcade. Like gaming consoles Apple TV is only updated like once every 4 years. Apple Arcade is a fundamentally different audience than enthusiast +AAA gamers. It's a causal gaming audience, which apparently Dave2D doesn't consider to be a gaming audience? Apple is already in their own gaming space niche. It would be incredibly challenging to break into PS4/Xbox/PC gaming land, and frankly pretty stupid for Apple for even to try as enthusiast gamers are not Apple's target demographic for any product they sell.

His claims are pointless. How do you expect any company to excel at anything at any time?, just bcoz they are doing good in something else?. AAA games demand not only demand good hardware they also demand specific designs and good thermals. You can't game well on an imac with 16gb graphics already installed bcoz of the design and thermals. Pure gaming is the realm of Nvidias, sonys and Microsofts not apples. Apple stands for luxury hardware not 'great' hardware. Hope that helps

I also believe that there is another reason that they do not enter to the gaming industry. I believe that money is of course a enormous reason if not the majority but I also believe that they do not want to enter that industry because that is not what people know them for. If Apple started getting in that industry I would still buy from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo because I know that these companies legitimately know gaming and they do not just need to pull in random developers to get them started. They have been professionals at gaming for decades

Macs cost too much to be used for gaming, also the M1 Pro and Max gpus are good but are not on par with the architecture of RDNA 2. Teraflops is a measure of how much operations a processor can do, but what is being processed is a different story. Also the next gen consoles use GDDR6 which is vastly superior to LPDDR5 in memory bandwidth and speed that a MacBook Pro with a M1 Max and 64 gb ram does 400 gbs compared to the PS5 that does 448 gbs with only 16gb. Your best bet is wait till AMD releases a Arm based SOC that uses RDNA 2/3 and gets used by oems.

If I remember correctly Apple will be forced to allow developers the ability to add a button where users can pay outside of Apple's in-app purchase system because of the Apple vs Epic Case. That's definitely going to take a huge chunk out of Apple's "gaming" revenue. So who knows, they may look outside of mobile and into pc/console since gaming is growing as a market.

something that’s on my mind, when the day that games get ported to work on windows on arm. can’t apple (or individual company or whatever) partner with steam, or crossover or something in the future to have that like proton layer so that developers don’t have to directly port the game to mac but just have game developers better support that layer? like (idk if metal API and Proton are the same thing since one is low level and other is high level) rossetta is already doing a fairly good job with alot of the things but idk just having some kind of the same support like linux gets for gaming would be nice.

you have to ask your self, when it comes to the computer market for Apple, who are buying them, are the content creators. Not the gamers, especially considering how gamers or some like to build out a rig, is totally opposite to what Apple offers with the all powerful computers, a few options for memory, storage. On the flip side some of the applications that come standard in Mac OS is geared towards creating content rather than games….

Apple knows that the gaming as we now it, its gonna disappear, because all the gaming on the next 10 years gonna migrate to the Streaming gaming, call it, xcloud or gforce Now, I can play triple A games on my iPad or my Iphone or my Mac mini, today, Apple knows that, the steaming gaming its the real next gen, so probably they wat to transform Apple Arcade on an Streaming platform, and just forget about DirectX or Vulkan.

I think on top of all that there's the lack of ecosystem entanglement with a dedicated gaming console or platform. Even Windows doesn't really keep people in an ecosystem with their gaming services, despite being necessary for many gamers, they're pretty much separate from most of their ecosystem & enterprise stuff (even xbox and PC are basically different worlds) so it'll have to be its own market in a different industry, while their mobile gaming is just value-added iPhones through which gamers slide into their ecosystem

Apple already sells handheld and console gaming devices. They also have a very profitable games store as Dave explained. They also have Apple Arcade similar to Xbox Game Pass. If you go to any apple store, they have controllers paired to Apple TV and iPads. They are really selling these devices for gaming. It is just not AAA gaming. and it is already possible to run AAA titles using game streaming. It is very likely that as new models of iPad and Apple TV are released with more graphics horsepower, developers start taking advantage of these and bring more and more high-fidelity games to iOS. Most of these games are also playable as-is on new Macs so there is no need for extra porting effort. So Apple can become dominant in gaming without even trying. Just because they have the user base and every developer wants their games on iOS.

As a developer, I can say confidently that Apple cares about gaming, a lot. It is just that Apple's priority is that the ecosystem must be under its control, like every other fields that Apple engages, to an extent where Apple would prefer to have no big titles on macOS over ceding control to the industry. Apple supports only the in-house Metal graphic API-rarely used by the industry for desktop games given its poor performance and compatibility. One may say that the licensing of DirectX is decided by Microsoft, who is unlikely to do so. Yet Apple didn't choose to support Open GL or Vulkan either. The result is that Apple's game pass service, Apple Arcade, is filled with mobiles games that are made desktop. The big titles are rarely seen.

But if apple truly wanted the apple silicon to revolutionise the market, they would provide Rosetta 4, capable of emulating powerpc, x86, and android both 32 bit, and 64 bit. M1 and Big Sur already are capable (with a bit of open source software) of running Xbox, PlayStation, Nin Tendo, powerpc Mac oOS 9 through 10.4, and Windows Arm software. It is only a short step to add in the ability to translate intel code, and 32, and maybe even 16bit code. The apple silicon hardware, with a full blown MacOS Rosetta engine, could potentially run pretty much any consumer operating system from the past 30 years, flawlessly, with minimal user skill, in virtual machines, - if the user has a licensed version of the OS. I for instance have a licensed copy of almost every MacOS going back to OS 7, and many other OS licenses have become free to use. The apple silicon hardware, even in its early development stages is powerful enough to do this emulation of other hardware platforms flawlessly albeit in certain contexts slightly slower than the original hardware with a dedicated expensive for its time graphics card. By 2025, apple silicon could easily perform x86 64 bit windows 10 at similar speeds as an i11 gtx3090, under emulation/virtualisation. Give users that ability built into the MacOS, (without complex fiddles) and gamers will flock to Apple, so that they can dust off their childhood games, that they paid cold hard cash for. And then they would also buy apples overpriced external DVD drives too. And accountants and tech heads will convince their clients that Apple hardware is the best product to buy for point of sale and management apps, because those aging but fundamental applications that many businesses purchased two decades ago will be easily ported to the brand spanking new, far more reliable, and aesthetic Mac when their X86-32 windows XP machine depreciates to being junk they can’t retire.

Apple doesn’t care full stop. When they release beta quality MacOS as the launch OS of their premium professional products like the new (2021) 14” and 16” M1 Pro and M1 Pro Max, it is clear that they don’t even care about their primary prosumer user base who use their devices for content creation. Monterey at launch, and still in Nov. 2021 still can’t do Bluetooth connectivity -keyboards, mice, and audio reliably. And worse yet fails when connecting USB hub devices like a wired Apple Keyboard. Apple could require the few triple A mobile games to be built and sold in the App Store as M1 apple silicon capable. This would require almost zero effort on game developers part to achieve. In many cases simply checking the box in the IDE build settings to allow deployment on apple silicon macs. And to optimise, simply adding in the keyboard, mouse, trackpad, and gaming controller input options one expects on desktop hardware. The mobile games sold in Apple stores was designed and built to run on apple silicon, and apple silicon graphics. The only other tweak that would be necessary is a small tweak to memory management so that the games recognise the much expanded graphics, and cpu ram space available on desktop devices. Some developers have grasped that thornless nettle, and are doing well, others do not yet understand the opportunity and yes Apple has done an appallingly bad job of convincing mobile Developers that a very real opportunity exists.

Maybe that's a good thing. I wish Apple would focus on quality Educational Apps. American education, especially in STEM, is so far behind, it's no wonder a large number of students pursuing advanced degrees are (and have been for years) from other countries. The pandemic lowered the quality, quantity, and engagement level of learning even further in America for children.

I doubt people buy games on the iPad. I’m sure they have the numbers. I’ve bought most AAA games on the iPad have you? Doubt it. They also go off numbers the GTA remastered version is coming to iOS but you all probably bought it already for consoles. You have to support things if you want to see them flourish. At the very least I would argue that dead cell is better on iOS then it is on switch but I bet the switch version sold more. Dead cells was even cheaper on iOS than it was on any other platform and since I have an iPad I’m playing 120fps. Apple doesn’t care and they probably shouldn’t right? They gave us the hardware now its up to the people to create the magic.
